Abstract
This book presents the findings of an extensive, five-year field study dedicated to documenting the medicinal flora of Semnan Province, Iran. It serves as a vital scientific resource for the accurate identification and classification of these plants, addressing a critical need to correct widespread misidentification and the use of multiple local names in folk medicine and herbal markets.
The book is systematically structured into two main parts:
Chapter 1 provides foundational knowledge, including a brief history of plant taxonomy, an overview of the vegetation in Semnan Province, an introduction to the Damghan University Herbarium, a comprehensive list of medicinal species with their scientific and Persian names, and an essential guide to botanical terminology and key morphological characteristics for plant identification.
Chapter 2 forms the core of the work, offering detailed profiles for each species. These profiles include botanical descriptions, geographical distribution (within Iran and globally), specific observation records within Semnan Province, and a thorough account of their therapeutic properties.
By combining rigorous field research with precise botanical science, this book is an invaluable reference for students of biology and medical sciences. Furthermore, it aims to lay the groundwork for future investment in the cultivation and industrial processing of these valuable medicinal plants, promoting both economic development and the sustainable use of local natural resources.
