Abstract
This book provides a unique and in-depth perspective on the critical field of antibiotic discovery and development, addressing one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine: antimicrobial resistance.
It begins by chronicling the transformative "Golden Age" of antibiotics, which dramatically increased human life expectancy, and contrasts it with the current crisis where drug-resistant pathogens, such as MRSA, cause tens of thousands of deaths annually. The book directly confronts the alarming paradox of our time: a decreasing pipeline of new antibiotics and a shrinking number of trained researchers in the field, despite a growing medical need.
Unlike standard references that merely list antibiotic classes and mechanisms, this work aims to paint a complete picture of the entire journey from discovery to market. It serves as an essential guide for newcomers and seasoned researchers alike, covering:
Historical Screening Methods: The surprisingly complex early discovery efforts.
Standard Laboratory Assays: Practical protocols for evaluating the antimicrobial potential of compounds against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeast, and fungi.
The Regulatory Pathway: A detailed overview of the final development process, including the studies required for regulatory approval and market launch.
Positioned as a valuable reference, this book is designed to educate and inspire current and future researchers to reignite the fight against superbugs and safeguard the future of modern medicine.
