Abstract
This book offers a specialized and in-depth examination of motor competence—an individual's ability to perform a wide range of motor actions with coordination and control. It positions motor competence as a crucial component of physical literacy and a key predictor of lifelong physical activity levels and overall fitness.
The book delves into the complex dynamics of motor development, with a particular focus on the critical relationship between actual motor competence and perceived motor competence (an individual's belief in their own motor abilities). It explores how this perception mediates the impact of actual skill on physical activity engagement and weight status, and how this relationship evolves with age, chronological age, relative age, and biological maturation.
Structured into eight chapters, this work integrates theory and practice. It covers foundational concepts and models of motor competence, different motor competence profiles, and essential methods for assessment. Crucially, it provides practical guidance on developing motor competence through play and exercise.
By addressing key topics such as age and gender differences, assessment approaches, and intervention strategies, this book is an invaluable resource for a wide audience, including physical education teachers, sports coaches, and researchers in the fields of motor development and skill acquisition. The final chapter outlines important directions for future research, establishing the book as a cornerstone for both current practice and ongoing scholarly inquiry.
