Abstract

This book is a comprehensive laboratory manual dedicated to the classical (non-instrumental) methods of identifying unknown organic compounds. Structured into seventeen chapters, it provides a systematic guide for students, beginning with preliminary tests and leading to full compound identification.
The manual covers the complete workflow of traditional organic analysis, including:

Preliminary examinations
Elemental qualitative analysis (sodium fusion)
Classification by solubility
Specific tests for the identification of functional groups
Preparation of solid derivatives for confirmation

It is designed to handle a wide range of unknowns, from pure synthetic or commercial compounds to impure mixtures extracted from natural plant or animal tissues. Consequently, separation techniques are also incorporated into the curriculum, with specific experiments for separating binary and ternary mixtures.
This manual serves a dual purpose: it is the primary text for an Organic Qualitative Analysis laboratory course and can also be used to teach the introductory theoretical principles of organic compound identification.
