Abstract

One of the most interdisciplinary and practical branches of linguistics is the field of language planning, which fortunately has received special attention among linguists in Iran in recent years. A historical study of the formation of any academic field shows that this process involves going through many ups and downs, and the field of language planning studies—both from a theoretical perspective and a practical dimension—has not been and is not exempt from this in Iran and other countries. What has received the most attention today in Iran regarding the Persian language, among the various aspects of language planning, is the domain of lexical selection. Although it cannot be said that other domains of the Persian language have been deprived of language planning thought and action, a study of the hundred-year history of Persian language planning shows that the aforementioned domain has received greater attention. One way to balance adequate attention to all language domains from a holistic perspective is through comprehensive familiarity with the field of language planning and policy studies and recognizing it as one of the main and practical topics of linguistics—something that cannot be achieved except through enriching the literature related to this field of study. Perhaps the number of books published in the field of language planning and policy does not even reach the number of fingers on one hand, and for these reasons, the publication of the present book heralds the beginning of a new chapter in Persian language planning and policy. The book Language Policy by Bernard Spolsky, published in 2004, is a distinguished work among the works in the field of language planning studies. This book, in thirteen chapters, examines different aspects of language planning and policy with a typological approach while referring to real evidence from the world's languages.
