Abstract

In summary, the importance of rock mechanics and rock engineering cannot be overemphasized. These fields are essential for ensuring the safety and stability of rock structures and rock masses, as well as for the sustainable and efficient use of natural resources. The development of new techniques and materials in these fields is vital for addressing the challenges facing the construction and mining industries today.

Chapter 1 of the book provides an overview of rock mechanics and defines key concepts, while Chap. 2 illustrates stress analyses. Chapter 3 focuses on plane strain analyses, and Chap. 4 delves into rock behavior and theories of failure. Chapter 5 discusses the failure of brittle anisotropic rocks, while Chap. 6 covers miscellaneous rock properties. In Chap. 7, the book examines the strength properties of rocks, and in Chap. 8, the design of underground openings in competent rocks is introduced. Chapter 9 explains the distribution of stresses around underground excavations in rocks, while Chap. 10 demonstrates how to design multiple openings in massive rocks. Chapter 11 focuses on the design of single openings in bedded rocks.

Each chapter ends with an assignment designed to test students’ understanding of what has been discussed. By involving students with the information provided and the concepts, principles, and applications covered in the chapter, these assignments

intended to improve literacy.
