Abstract
This book is the second volume of a modern physics laboratory manual designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experimental skills. It addresses the shortcomings of outdated lab instructions by providing updated, high-quality experiments for undergraduate students in physics and engineering physics.
The manual is grounded in the core principles of scientific experimentation—control, replication, and generalizability—guiding students to conduct precise and meaningful research. It is structured into five specialized sections, each focusing on a key area of modern physics:
Modern Physics Experiments
Optics Laboratory
Solid State Physics Laboratory
Advanced Optics Laboratory
Laser Laboratory
A significant emphasis is placed on proficiency with modern software tools. Students are required to use Origin for data analysis and graphing in the Modern Physics and Optics labs, and both Origin and MATLAB for the Advanced Optics and Laser laboratories, ensuring they develop essential skills for contemporary scientific work.
The manual also instills rigorous lab discipline, outlining protocols for:
Using a lab notebook for detailed documentation.
Preparing for experiments through pre-lab study.
Adhering to lab safety and decorum (e.g., wearing lab coats).
Completing pre-lab quizzes.
Incorporating error analysis into all reports.
By integrating modern experimental content with strict methodological standards and computational proficiency, this book serves as an essential resource for cultivating a new generation of precise, skilled, and critical experimental physicists.
